Consider the time long, long ago when the only keyboard-using device you ever used was the clunky, hard-drive behemoth of your desktop computer. I bet that computer was so big that you had to buy a new desk and designate half your office for it, right? Those days are over though and they have been for a while. Nowadays we have more computing power in our tiny 5-inch smartphones than some of the computers in the past decade ever did.

And that’s phenomenal and we should champion and celebrate it, but not without recognising that trying to use our phones and tablets as replacements for our bigger computers can sometimes be a hassle. Especially when we want to use them for work. How can we solve that? Logitech’s new Bluetooth keyboard might just be the answer.

Called the Logitech ‘Bluetooth Multi-Device Keyboard K480’, the idea behind this bit of must-have kit is so deceptively simple that it’s a wonder why these things aren’t everywhere all over the market. As you can see in the video above, how it works is that you can connect any Bluetooth enabled device – whether that be your smartphone, tablet or PC hard-drive – and use the keyboard wirelessly. But more than that, there’s a three-selection switch on Logitech’s new accessory that allows you to switch between the devices seamlessly.

In the middle of a putting together a work presentation on your computer but you’ve just gotten an important text that you need to reply to? Turn that switch and the keyboard will hook up to your phone in a flash. You could even work on two or three documents at once, across several devices if you’re really in a hurry – this new Logitech keyboard will let you do that and it’ll let you do it quickly too.

Furthermore, it also boasts a whopping great Bluetooth range of up to 30 feet (10 metres) and will work with Mac, iOS, Android or Windows devices which is fantastic news if you, like many people, have an Android phone, an iPad tablet and a Windows computer (or any combination of those operating systems, really) and need a device that will work with them all. It even has a special groove for your mobile devices so that you can actually see what you’re doing as you type, which is a useful but often overlooked feature.

Admittedly, Logitech’s new bit of tech does come with the downside of being 820 grams and so it’s not exactly the lightest add-on out there but at the quite reasonable price of $49.99 at least your wallet will still be left feeling heavy too.
