With the 5 year anniversary of iPhones coming up in mid June, timing couldn’t be better for all the new info that seems to spilling, rather than leaking, out about the iPhone 5. We have all heard the rumors on the suspected release date with speculations being a release in June at the WWDC or in October like the last year. But lately there’s even more talk about a potential larger screen size.

Talk is cheap, that’s true, so that’s why it’s so nice to now see a some proof to go with it. In just the past few days fact and fiction appears to be be merging closer together as we see more proof beginning to emerge on the larger screen size. Something iPhone lovers have been waiting for since Android first released their phones with their more likeable large screens.

Where’s the Proof?

Recently, on CydiaBlog we saw the schematic blueprints of the newest iPhone, schematics that indeed show a new larger screen. The blueprint also showed some placement changes for things like the speakers and headphone jack. Although this was nice to look at, there was still no proof that what we were actually viewing were the true schematics of the iPhone 5. Well, that is until today.

What’s so new about today? Today, thanks to eTradeSupply, the world of high-tech just got a look at a what appears to be the new back plate for the iPhone 5. What’s a back plate going to show us you may wonder? Quite a lot actually. Just by examining the back plate you can see that the blueprints appear to be right on with their configurations of new speaker placement and other cool changes. This list is what eTradeSupply noted about the changes to the newest iPhone:

  1. The next generation iPhone will be the same width as the current 4 and 4S models, but will be taller in size – around 4-inches diagonally.
  2. The upcoming iPhone will be much thinner. The exact dimensions are unknown, however.
  3. The leaked part is neither a battery door nor a middle plate. It is a single integrated part! The iPhone 5 back plate is one piece anchored by an aluminum alloy. Major design changes in the upcoming iPhone.
  4. Earphone jack has been moved from top to the bottom of the iPhone
  5. Apple has redesigned the dock connector which is smaller in size
  6. SIM card tray is different in size – a smaller one. So, expect a smaller SIM card tray.
  7. Enhanced speaker grills. If you carefully examine the video, you’ll notice an extra space at the bottom – may be to enhance the speaker’s quality.

Even better than reading about it is watching a video of it, so watch the video below and see for yourself some of the cool differences we will probably see soon; soon meaning June? For that we’ll just have to wait a few more days as the conference starts Monday!

Back Plate Details Tell us Even More Size Changes May be in Store for iPhone 5

Another thing this back plate shows us is that they have incorporated the battery cover and the back plate within one another, whereas in the past generations they were separate pieces. Why does this matter to us? It slims the new iPhone 5 down, which had also been speculated upon by KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

At AppleInsider.com, Kuo’s speculations were that “a new metal back could result in further reduced thickness of 0.96 millimeters, which would allow the next iPhone to measure just 7.9 millimeters thick —noticeably thinner than the 9.3-millimeter-thick iPhone 4S.” This is another rumor that appears to be backed up by the new metal back plate in the hands of eTradeSupply.

What Does This Mean For Your Apps?

With all these changes to the display size on iPhone 5 one can only wonder if Apple will still be able to maintain resolution and especially their bragged about retina display. According to more rumors, there will be a minimal effect in this half inch difference, at least as far as display goes. The changes that will be seen from iPhone going from 3.5” to 4”, is a pixel boost that is jumping from 640 x 960 to 640 x 1136, and the resolution and ratio will now be 16:9.

Although this is going to be great for playing games or watching widescreen videos, it isn’t so great for app developers who may need to upgrade their apps. In the meantime, the new resolution and 16:9 ratio will mean that you may see black borders along the sides of the apps that are supported by earlier iPhone versions.

All of these rumors, and now what appears to also be confirmation of said rumors, you can feel the excitement in the air. Perhaps it’s a clever ploy by Apple with their WWDC conference just a few days away. Whatever the reason, we can all feel pretty confident in knowing that a larger screen is coming out for iPhone 5, but as for when we will see it, that’s something we will probably never be sure of until the day Apple decides to play show and tell.
