As the third best selling game of all time, Minecraft has become a massively successful hit in just 5 short years. Beginning as a slightly buggy alpha as created by Markus “Notch” Persson, developer Mojang was created to help the blocky title become what it is today.
A very expensive spanner was thrown into the works earlier this year though, as Microsoft bought Mojang (and Minecraft in the process) for $2.5 billion. A giant figure for a studio that has less than seven published games to its name.
As a result of the deal, many gamers have raised questions as to whether or not Microsoft’s ownership will lead to a lack of Minecraft support on opposing platforms (Android, iOS and PlayStation). For the time being that doesn’t seem to be the case however as Minecraft PS Vita now has a release date attached to it.
Announced recently by 4J Studios, the development team tasked with porting the game to Sony’s handheld, Minecraft PS Vita will be released tomorrow for European players. North American players meanwhile can download the game from the PlayStation Store today.
Furthermore, Notch and Mojang’s popular block-building crafter will also be released at retail. From November 11th, you’ll be able to pick of Minecraft PS Vita in physical form (on its own card) which is handy if you haven’t got a lot of room left on your PS Vita’s memory card.
Even with these release dates penned in for the touchscreen PlayStation device, some concerns about Minecraft’s non-Xbox or PC support remain. Issues in the PS4 and PS Vita versions of the game led to its release dates being pushed back. In fact, the issues were so prevalent that the PS4 version of Minecraft failed Sony’s bug-testing and had to be resubmitted.
It’s yet to be seen whether this will affect sales (and if this will affect Microsoft’s decision to support other platforms in turn) but Minecraft PS Vita is out from today in North America (from tomorrow in Europe) regardless.
